The Blue Bioeconomy has enormous potential in the Baltic Sea Region, but development of this sector requires a critical mass of actors. Since its foundation in 2015, the SUBMARINER Network for Blue Growth EEIG (www.submariner-network.eu) has provided a platform for actors from the whole Baltic Sea Region to come together and actively promote innovative and sustainable uses of marine resources through national and transnational knowledge transfer and by generating actions, initiatives and events.
In close cooperation with its members, the platform over the past years has been able to raise more than 18 million EUR in funding for projects across the spectrum of blue bioeconomy sectors, such aqua- and mariculture, blue biotechnology, marine litter and their enabling tools such as maritime spatial planning, smart specialisation and acceleration services.
Under the umbrella of SUBMARINER Network, more than 15 different institutions created the Baltic Blue Biotechnology Alliance, an Interreg Baltic Sea Region project (2016-2019) and its successor project ALLIANCE+ (2019-2021). Through the ALLIANCE network, we match individuals, companies, business support organisations and scientific institutions with a passion for blue biotechnology and the joint goal of advancing the sector. In the enclosed brochure we are proud to present the ALLIANCE´s experiences and results over the past three years, in support of more than 20 start-ups, SMEs and regions pursuing new blue biotechnology products and services. Thanks to the intensive activities of the ALLIANCE, six new marine bio-based products have already successfully entered the market, with more to come.

In frame of the ALLIANCE+ project, a match-making event on 23-24 January 2020 in Helsinki, Finland will happen. Not only will you be able to network with our actors and members of the mentoring programme, you will also have the opportunity to present your expertise, your potential service within the blue biotechnology field, and your general interests in blue biotechnology in the Baltic Sea Region.
