How to turn research results into real business value when creating a spin-off or startup? When does intellectual property become a decisive factor in negotiations with a university, investors or business partners? What needs to be done before the first public presentation or product demonstration so as not to lose patenting or licensing opportunities?
This training is intended for researchers planning or already creating a spin-off, as well as spin-offs and startups seeking to clearly understand how to manage intellectual property from the first steps to commercialization.
In the first part of the training, Dovilė Tebelškytė, a representative of the State Patent Office of the Republic of Lithuania, will discuss when and why intellectual property becomes critically important for a start-up company, what types of intellectual property are most relevant for researchers, when they acquire legal protection, and how to choose between patenting and trade secrets. The patenting paths in Lithuania and internationally will be presented, as well as the most common mistakes made by researchers, such as premature disclosure of results or improperly defined patent scope. The meaning of trademarks and the importance of their registration even at an early stage of a company will also be discussed.
In the second part, Marijus Dingilevskis, a senior lawyer at Sorainen, will share practical insights on the ownership and transfer of intellectual property from researchers, universities, employees or external service providers, as well as the most common mistakes that later hinder attracting investments. Licensing transactions will be examined as one of the main methods of commercialization – when it is worth licensing a technology and when to develop it internally, and what investors pay attention to in this case.
The event will also feature a practical example of a spin-off/startup, revealing real-world solutions and mistakes that researchers face when transitioning from science to business.
